The Detroit VA Medical Center is Seeking a Chief Physician for the Emergency Department. You could be part of an important initiative to provide mental health care for our nations Veterans! Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: The Emergency Department chief must be a Board Certified, Emergency Residency trained, Emergency physician with 2-3 years experience in emergency medicine and must maintain requirements of board certification. 1-2 years of administrative experience. Moderate knowledge in computer skills, specifically MS word and excel, and Power point. Clinical Duties include performing direct patient care 50% of his time depending on department needs. All of the following are administrative duties that he/ she are required to perform. In coordination with Nursing and Administration makes recommendations to improve utilization of resources, services and staff. Assures that the quality, safety, and appropriateness of emergency patient care services are monitored and evaluated and that appropriate actions based on findings are taken. Provides and monitors continuing education, performance improvement and career development for Emergency Department staff. Establish a staff rewards system. Participates in planning activities within the Organization and the community of veterans and develops new programs to address veteran's health problems. Assures that the Department is adequately equipped and staffed for providing patient care. Takes charge of ED Quality Improvement, monitors and ensures the quality of care in the ED and participates in the hospital Emergency Management services. The Chief is responsible for monitoring the overall performance of the department to comply with the directives, recommendations and instructions of higher leadership as applicable to his / her department. The Chief is responsible to designate and authorize an acting chief to perform his functions when he/she is unavailable. In his absence the acting Chief who is a qualified physician designee is always readily available. Is responsible for performing and documenting all aspects of performance of subordinates, including, but not limited to: Focused provider Professional Evaluations (FPPE) Ongoing provider Professional Evaluations (OPE) Annual performance appraisals and performance pay determinations. Plan and conduct monthly Staff Meetings. Addresses and resolves all disputes within his/her department. Reports to service chief all issues and concerns related to the overall function of the department Agrees on attending leadership training and completing LMS learning modules, pertinent to his/her clinical and administrative function Work Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday with weekends and holidays.
