The Cincinnati, OH VA Medical Center is actively seeking a well-qualified Registered Nurse (RN) to work as a member of the Infection Prevention and Control Program within the Infection Diseases Section of Medical Service. Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 8 a.m. - 430 p.m. however this RN must be able to change schedule to accommodate the needs of the service which would include Holidays/Weekends/Off-Tours. This RN provides care and counseling of persons or in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling; provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and executing medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized provider. The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community. (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses). The registered nurse, as a licensed professional, will be responsible and accountable for his/her practice. This Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) RN is a member of the Infection Prevention and Control Program within the Infection Diseases Section of Medical Service at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center. This RN will work within the Infection Prevention and control program along with the Infection Control Nurse (Lead for the Infection Prevention and Control Program), Multi-drug Resistant Organisms (MDRO) Prevention Coordinator, Infection Prevention and Control Nurse, the Infection Prevention and Control Program Support Assistant, as well as the Hospital Epidemiologist and the Section Chief of Infectious Diseases to move forward the tenets and goals of the Infection Prevention and Control Program, The Annual Infection Prevention and Control Plan and good principles of infection prevention and control throughout the institution. The Infection Prevention and Control Program is a high profile program with interaction within all settings of the Medical Center (Acute Care, Community Living Center, Mental/Behavioral Health, Outpatient/Ambulatory/Home Care Programs, etc.), and is a program with institutional oversight for various accreditation, regulatory, agency, and local public health liaison activities. The Infection Prevention and Control Nurse is a professional nurse with expertise in the field of infection prevention and control and a strong educational component and training in microbiology beyond standard nursing training in this area (e.g., prior experience as a microbiology technologist, research training in microbiology, educational course work of the equivalence of a minor or major emphasis during post-high school education). Other duties may include but are not limited to: Responsible and accountable for Infection prevention and control program implementation, infection prevention and control planning, surveillance, customer service and education Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care and/or program requirements. Accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice. Utilizes effective prevention and control activities that are specific to the practice setting, the population served and the continuum of care. Provides facility-wide quality improvement by performing surveillances and utilizing data to advocate for advancing the standard of care. Provides guidance on reducing the transmission of infectious diseases in acute care, long-term care and outpatient care settings. Demonstrates leadership characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and learning in the coordination, development, implementation and evaluation of learning opportunities and/or integrated educational programs for staff, affiliates, patients and families in a diverse, rapidly changing, complex health care environment. Responsible for strengthening educational initiatives for Performance Improvement, Patient/Family Education, Staff and Affiliate competency verification, in-service, continuing education, career development, regulatory mandates, policies, procedures and internal/external consulting and for launching integrated educational programs that support the organization's performance objectives. Provides expertise in infection prevention and control (IPC) and epidemiology, knowledge and guidance. Participates in the development and revisions of policies and procedures, investigation of suspected outbreaks and exposures to infectious agents, collaboration with public health agencies and interdisciplinary team members in providing specialized care to patients and includes cross coverage for the other Infection Prevention and Control Program professionals.
