The Nursing Assistant position is located in the 4B Nursing Unit within the Medical Care Line of the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, TX. Current permanent VA employees and Federal employees from other federal agency should apply under CBST-11297346-22-TH Nursing Assistant function as a member of the 4B Nursing Unit. The employee is responsible for the more complex personal patient care duties, supporting diagnostic procedures, technical nursing treatments, patient charting, and patient instruction which involves direct work relationships with patients and participation as a member of the nursing care team in direct services to patients. Primary duties include, but are not limited to: Assist patients with accomplishing activities of daily living and rehabilitation measures, i.e., therapeutic positioning and turning, use of assistive devices (canes, walkers, wheelchairs) or as prescribed for, patient's safe physical functioning, assisting patients with ambulation/transfer activities Performs basic procedures for accomplishing the patient requirements for nutrition and hydration, i.e., feeding patients, record and document intake and output, inform RN/LVN regarding dietary and po intake for patients and document, on electronic ADL flow sheet Performs basic procedures, which include but not limited to accomplishing the patient requirements for elimination need, i.e., assisting the patient with bedpan, urinal, bedside commode and other toileting activities, providing water to patients, reports and records elimination patterns Properly uses equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, and correctly applies EKG (12 leads) and obtains EKG strip in critical care areas, etc. Assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse. Communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals. Participates in activities that promote safety for the Veteran and others in the work area, including, but not limited to, performing monitoring of the patient safety monitoring system after completion of orientation and completion of competency demonstration.
