The Primary Care Service within the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona, PA is currently recruiting for one full-time Physician Assistant. The PA is accountable to the Chief, Primary Care Service and serves as primary care provider to panels of Veterans fulfilling all primary care needs, including acute and chronic illness, gender specific, mental health, and preventive care along with coordination of care delivery. This position is located within the Primary Care Service at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, a secondary care facility with 30 acute beds and a 40 bed Nursing Home Care Unit, and three Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Tour of Duty for this position is primarily dayshift, Monday through Friday, and may include some extended clinic hours, as well as weekend coverage, in the event that additional services are added. The duties and responsibilities are delivered throughout the medical center including all clinical and other patient care areas involved with the service. Major Duties include but are not limited to: Obtaining medical histories and performing physical examinations. Providing and coordinating medical care for assigned patients in any care setting, including establishing diagnoses, formulating and implementing care plans, and providing follow-up care. Evaluating outpatients to determine the need for further health care. Ordering diagnostic studies and other special tests, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Tomography (CT) scans, etc. Carrying out health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education activities. Ordering or obtaining laboratory specimens. Ordering ancillary services, such as, pharmacy, social services, physical medicine and rehabilitation therapies, prosthetic services, etc. Ordering VA specialty service consults and initiating requests for non-VA medical care and consults in accordance with VHA and local facility policy and procedures. Ordering patient care supplies. Writing orders for or prescribing medications: Work Schedule: Typical tour of duty is expected to be Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm; however other tours may be required should Veteran needs arise.
